Gear Closet

Oh the conundrum. The hypocrisy even! I love being outside in unspoiled nature, free from commerce and its attendant spoiling. But. BUT... I freaking love gear. All of my consumerist impulses fly to the fore when it comes to gear. Titanium. Cuben fiber. Silnylon. Four way stretch with synthetic insulation. IPX waterproof ratings. Just the sound of these terms make me FEEL smarter, more competent, and more wise about the outdoors. Yes, I have an emotional attachment to this manmade "stuff." Stuff that is marketed in magazines and on websites with images of beautiful young people posing within gorgeous landscapes. I try to keep this in mind, but I submit, gear; I submit. You help me do what I love better, and (how's this for a rationalization) you help me spend days at a time burning very little carbon, free from buying other things I don't need, and, I believe, becoming a more thoughtful and engaged person. So, you win, gear.  That said, I'm always excited to learn about DIY projects, gear companies with more sustainable practices, and ways to recycle, reduce, and reuse equipment. With that in mind, let's talk gear…
