Beginner's Guide

Being immersed in wilderness away from the clutter, noise, and distractions of "civilization" can be profoundly transformative. The experiences I've had in exploring backcountry spaces over the past couple of years have changed my perception of the world and of myself for the better. I feel more attuned to the wisdom of nature, more motivated to live resourcefully, and more appreciative (and sometimes wary) of the luxuries and conveniences of a 21st century life. More than anything, though, time spent in the wilderness always feels like a return home and a reconnection to something larger than myself. Because most of our lives have become so convenient and dependent on technology, it takes a bit of preparation to experience wilderness responsibly. I know it did for me, anyhow. With that in mind, I decided to offer an overview guide of some of the concepts, tools, and skills you'll need to acquire before heading out for your first overnight trip. Despite the graphic to your left of a large, leather-bound book, this guide is by no means exhaustive. It is simply a three part introduction to get you moving in the right direction. So, I hope this helps, and I hope you're able to get out there and enjoy your first outing into backcountry wilderness soon. Here is the guide:
